Dear Fellow Patient,

I'm Eric DenUyl, an 18-year-old patient of Dr. Pachman's. At age 11 I became very weak over a period of several weeks and was diagnosed with Polymyositis. After years of medications, hospital visits and physical therapy, I recovered. I’m now a senior in High School preparing for college.

During the years of sickness and recovery, I never felt like talking about it. I just wanted to get it over with and forget it ever happened. After writing my college essay and reflecting on my life, I realized that I benefited from the disease. I became a person more understanding of others' ailments. When I was weak, I found various activities that helped me maintain a positive attitude. I thought I might share them with you.

I became engrossed in the field of magic. I learned various tricks and began to perform shows. I found this to be an activity that required little physical activity, so it was appropriate for my condition. I read a great deal of books. I also watched a lot of movies. But I found a hobby like magic to be different because I was rewarded for the time I spent. I would practice for hours, and was rewarded with a unique skill.

I'm not saying this is the only way to get through these tough times. However, it’s something to think about. Taking advantage of my inactivity rewarded me overall. Getting through this period of time isn’t easy. It requires a great deal of mental strength to put up with hours of tests and therapy. It isn’t the end of the world though. After recovering, I was off on backpacking trips through the mountains. I realized how lucky I was to have such a talented staff at Children’s Hospital.

If you have any questions or would just like to talk, I would love for you to e-mail me. It would be great to hear from you.

Keep up the good attitude!

Sincerely,
Eric DenUyl
