About Us - Who we are...

We are a unique Hawaiian company whose primary focus is on quality Hawaiian products. Our Hawaiian products are sourced from small local businesses and individuals. All of our products are available for purchase on-line and we do not have a physical walk-in storefront. (A major reason we are able to pass on substantial savings to our customers due to low overhead!)

Our devotion to promoting Hawaiian Products has earned us the reputation of making available unique Made In Hawai`i products on the World Wide Internet. The majority of our Hawaiian products are not mass-produced.

The majority of our products are produced on the Big Island of Hawaii, and are handcrafted by small independent crafts persons, artists, woodturners, and senior citizens, who devote many hours of labor and love to their finished product. Specialty items are made for us under our supervision and specifications. A very limited number of items (such as Music CDs) are finished or produced elsewhere for quality and cost assurance, and done so only by qualified sources or former Hawaiian residents who are familiar with Hawaiian products, materials, and culture. This not only insures authenticity and quality, but also enables us to promote Hawaiian products at a reasonable price.

We assure you that a lot of love, dedication, and pride have been put forth in producing many of the products we offer.

Our Early Beginnings

In 1997 Hale Akamai Consulting of San Francisco (HAC/SF) was established by Big Islander, Ric "Likeke" Bumanglag. He opened its doors in San Francisco to help support the growing Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in California, Nevada, and Pacific Northwest.

In 1998, his kokua led to the formation of two Northern California Hawaiian internet entities: Hale Akamai Consulting of San Francisco, and its small business web site design services, Smartdotcom.com of Hawai`i. From there, HACSF/Smartdotcom began the development of the Big Island public benefit web site, IAKAMAI.COM assisting Hawaiian and Polynesian organizations throughout the world get on the Internet free. In 2003 we launched CaptainPicard.com (the site you are currently on), a web site promoting affordable Made in Hawai`i products to Mainland visitors and Pacific Islanders living abroad.

In 2007 we relocated our main office to Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawai`i, to be close to our product sources. Our main office continues to include services of SmartDotCom.com, iAkamai.com, IAKAMAI.COM, and CaptainPicard.com.

In 2012--for the first time--the stunning artwork of noted Kohala artist, Reuben b (The Art of Kohala), was made available on the World Wide Web via IAKAMAI.COM. IAKAMAI.COM has become the artist's official web site.

Today, more than ever, we continue to thrive by focusing on unique local Hawaiian products, affordable web design services for small Hawaiian businesses, and the perpetuation of authentic Big Island-centric Hawaiian art.

How Can We Sell These Quality Products At Such Affordable Prices?

In a phrase, "by maintaining a low overhead"! By selling our products only via our on-line store we reduce overhead expenses and pass on the savings to you. Other suppliers sell through multi-level marketing methods that require expensive advertising, equipment, high infrastructure, and sales personnel.

We are an ohana business (family-owned) staffed by hardworking family members and friends who like what they do. We provide personalized service and respond to all inquiries. We have no call centers or off-shore customer service, nor do we track your buying habits or sell your information to others! What we do offer is good, quality products at reasonable prices (under $50 in many cases), and honest helpful service. That's it. No tricks; no gimmicks! And you don't have to "open an account" or "become a member" in order to use a credit card!

Business Hours

We are available "7 days a week" on an Aloha Schedule. If we are unable to take your call, you are automatically directed to our 24 hr. Aloha Message Center. We respond to our customers quickly, personally, and professionally.

Each year we close down for a short period of time to conduct our annual internal audit. During that time we also search for new, affordable Hawaiian products that seldom make it to the U.S. Mainland and world markets.

How To Make Your Products Available Through Our Web Site?

We are selective in the products we represent and make available on our web sites. If you would like us to consider your products on a consignment basis, please feel free to contact us. We are primarily interested in products made in Hawai`i (especially on the Big Island of Hawai`i) by independent local arts and crafts folks, Hawaiian small or family-owned businesses, or individuals whose products are considered "Hawaiian" or "Hawaii-centric."

Order Confirmation

Orders accepted for shipment will be confirmed to the purchaser via email. It is the responsibility of the purchaser to advise us of any errors immediately upon receipt of our Order Confirmation. All sales are considered final once shipment is made. Our Return Policy is listed further on below on this web page.

Pricing

We make every effort to ensure you are viewing the best current selling prices. In rare occasions we may post an incorrect price, due to an oversight. We will always confirm our pricing to you on our Order Confirmation. If our price(s) on our Order Confirmation to you is not what you originally ordered, you will always have the option of canceling your order pior to us shipping it. All prices are subject to change without prior notice.

Using the Order Form (Shopping Cart)

  • Shopping cart: Each item you select will show up in your Shopping Cart "basket" showing the purchase price. You do not have to create a "customer account." Our goal is to make ordering as quick and easy as possible.
  • Most orders are shipped complete. On rare occasions, items may not ship at the same time. We will combine as many items as possible in one order when it is going to the same destination.
  • Multiple orders placed on the same day of purchase - If you are using the same Credit Card to place multiple orders ON THE SAME DAY, you only need to enter your credit card information once. Simply make reference to your first order on subsequent orders in the Comments/Special Instructions box on the Check Out page.
  • Avoid delays - Always provide a telephone number or email address in case there are emergencies or delayed shipments beyond our control. WE WILL CONFIRM YOUR ORDER VIA EMAIL PRIOR TO PROCESSING IT, so it is important you provide a correct email address and telephone number.

Credit Card Purchases


We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, UnionPay, and the Discover cards as well as business and personal checks. If you choose to pay by business or personal check, your order will be processed once your check has cleared your bank.

Because we are an on-line store, our entire inventory is listed on our web site. Purchases should be made on-line using our electronic order form. THIS IS THE FASTEST WAY TO PROCESS YOUR ORDER.

Paying By Check

We accept Personal and Business Checks. To pay by check, continue to use the on-line order form and follow the instructions. The order will be processed when your check clears the bank. You will see this option as you complete the Shopping Cart Billing Information.

Here Are Some Things WE DON'T DO:

  • We don't surprise you with unexpected high delivery charges. We always show your delivery charges BEFORE completing and sending your order.
  • We are not on social media
  • We don't use fancy (and expensive) order processing store fronts. Threrefore, our prices are lower than most e-tailers.
  • We don't require you to "open an account" in order to process a credit card transaction.
  • We don't include your credit card information in our order confirmation to you.
  • Unlike many "shopping cart" web sites we don't collect information on your shopping experience or try to upsell you (bait and switch) when an item is temporarily unavailable.
  • We don't deploy any pop up ads to entice you to subscribe to newsletters, software, or ask you to create passwords to "access your account."
  • We don't leave your credit card information on our computer system. Once your order is confirmed and processed, we retain an off-line copy of your order in a secure environment in case there are any questions after you receive your order. These records are eventually destroyed.

Incoming Calls

You may use our 24 hour Message Center Line 808.327.9792 to have an Aloha Representative assist you. By limiting incoming phone calls, we are able to reduce our overhead expenses and therefore able to continue to provide you our low. low on-line prices.

Business Licences and Company Registration

We are licensed by the State of Hawai`i (GEID #W04814790-01).

Shipping

Except where noted, all items will be shipped USPS Mail that includes regular USPS Delivery Confirmation in most cases. We will ship FedEx upon request for an additional fee. Customer assumes all risks and responsibility if there is no one available to accept the shipment at its destination.

* Canadian Shipments - Generally carry a higher freight cost that will be added to each purchase..

Delivery

Although we try our best to accomodate customer requests for a particular delivery date, we cannot always guarantee the carrier will deliver a shipment on time or on a specific date. Deliveries are dependent upon the method of shipment, transport/weather conditions, and destination. For example, although FedEx* is one of the most dependable carriers, there is no guarantee it will be delivered as promised. Therefore, customers specifying a particular delivery date assumes all risks involved and refunds are not permitted.

CaptainPicard.com Merchandise Returns and Damages

All orders are packed and shipped with care. Should any merchandise arrive damaged, please retain all packing materials and product. The carrier may require evidence of the damage in order to pay any claim. Please call our 24 hour Message Center immediately to report damaged merchandise and we will instruct you of the next step.

Only returns that are accompanied by a Return Goods Authorization (RGA) issued by us will be accepted. Returns are not accepted after 10 days of purchase (10-day Of Purchase Policy). To request a RGA, customers can contact us via email at info@captainpicard.com or contact our Aloha Service Representative at 808.327.9792, and provide the following information:

  • Invoice or Reference Number of transaction
  • Date of Order
  • Item to be returned
  • Email and telephone number of purchaser
  • Reason for return

Only items that are unused, sealed in its original packaging, and in resalable condition may be accepted as returned goods. Credit will be for goods and applicable tax only, not freight. The return must be freight pre-paid.

If we shipped an item in error, we will replace the item (if still available) or reimburse the purchaser for merchandise and shipping costs, provided:

  • the item is returned in its original packaging by a carrier that we specify
  • accompanied by a RGA issued by us

NON-RETURNABLE ITEMS All perishables, Sale items, CD/DVDs that have been opened/damaged, BOOKS, and regulated items (for example, products that may come in contact with skin such as clothing, necklaces/lei, skin4 and hair care products, earrings, etc.) are non-returnable and non-refundable and is not covered by our 10-day Of Purchase Policy. Items where the package has been opened or seals broken are also non-returnable. (Return to Shopping Cart)

We do not accept collect shipments. You must obtain an RGA (return goods authorization) from us and ship the item insured, as we cannot be responsible for lost return packages.

Merchandise returned without authorization will be refused.

Restocking Charges

There is no re-stocking charge for errors made from our end. There will be a 25% restocking charge or a minimum of $15 (whichever is greater) on returns due to customer error. Merchandise must be in original packaging and in original condition.

Method of Refund

Refund will be made in the same form of payment originally used for purchase.

Display of Products

We try to be as accurate as possible regarding the descriptions and information about the products we offer. Please be aware that although pictures can show a lot, digital imaging varies on different monitors. The photos on our web sites are representative of the actual product and the delivered product may not be exactly as photographed. We make no warranties about the accuracy of the information we present.
